As you witnessed at Thursday's 6C meeting, I was not satisfied with the proposed 6C SMD map.
My biggest concern was that it didn't do a good job of integrating the new southern two tiers of squares so that should the Task Force agree to the 6C proposed ANC Boundaries, we could have a cohesive group of neighborhoods.
Therefore I finally have developed a revised SMD boundaries map (attached).
- This revised map better integrates the new-to-ANC 6C residents south of East Capitol Street. Creating two SMDs along the southern boundary joins together both current and new residents in each SMD.
- This also allows 6C to have two Commissioners to work with our 6B colleagues on Penn Ave SE and Eastern Market issues.
- In addition to integrating the new blocks into 6C and providing two Commissioners for work with 6B, the revised map has all SMD bordering other ANC’s fostering better joint efforts.
- This revised map has 2 SMDs to work with the Architect of the Capitol;
o 3 SMDs for Stanton Park and the National Park Service;
o 2 SMDs for Burnham Place;
o 3 SMDs for NoMa; and
o 3 SMDs for H St.

Cody, thank you for posting this, and again my apologies to my Colleagues on 6C and the Task Force for this 11th hour submission.
ReplyDeleteThis revision changes only 3 SMDs 6C05, 6C06,6C07. I have informal agreement from those 6C Commissioners who have responded.
This revision is intended to better knit north and south and have two Commissioners in the southern end of 6C working in harmony north and south of E. Capitol.
Tonight the Task Force made hard decision and was closely divided. I understand the sense of lost, but those of us across East Capitol know and love our neighbors to the south, the frequent walks to Eastern Market, the Metro, Barracks Row and flowing back and forth with friends. We like what's south of Independence, just as much as our potential new 6C residents, and we will work hard cause we live here too.
This will strengthen efforts to realize our goal of a healthy, sustainable, walkable neighborhood - the greatest neighborhood in the country.
I hope the Task Force vote holds, this SMD map is amended to the official 6C submission and the Council agrees because this redistricting can bind us closer together on the Hill, and foster connection throughout our ward and even One City!
Thanks to all the folks involved in this and especially the Task Force members. See you Thursday evening
